Grant program will provide more than $2 million for Maine wetlands

screen-shot-2016-12-21-at-6-35-23-amAUGUSTA — Ten communities in Maine will receive more than $2 million from the Maine Natural Resource Conservation Program to restore natural habitats such as wetlands.

The grant program is part of collaboration among the Maine Department of Environmental Protection, The Nature Conservancy and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The state says it will benefit 11 project sites around Maine.

 The grants are going to Blue Hill Heritage Trust, Brunswick-Topsham Land Trust, Damariscotta River Association, Downeast Salmon Federation, Great Works Regional Land Trust, Maine Coast Heritage Trust, Maine Rivers, Rangeley Lakes Heritage Trust and the town of Falmouth.
A spokeswoman for the Army Corps of Engineers says the program provides better outcomes for wetlands. It was created to offset impacts on natural resources by funding restoration or preservation at another.
